December & January Closures

UPCOMING EVENTS

Canine Body Language Workshop

Friday November 15th at 7:00 PM.

This FREE workshop is for humans only–bring the whole family!

For humans to effectively communicate, we’ve devised an immense vocabulary, but dogs are limited to ‘words’ formed by their body parts. Because of this, the dog must re use “words” and depend on context and combination to form his “sentence”. Understanding what your dog is saying is extremely important to prevent bites, fights, and miscommunications between dogs and humans, and dogs and dogs.

Grooming Workshop

Friday November 15th 6:00 PM

  • Do you have a poodle, or doodle, or long-coated dog that needs to be brushed?
  • Did you think you knew how to brush a dog… until the last time he was at the groomers and they had to “shave him down” because he was so matted?
  • Are your dog’s nails so long that you wore jeans all summer to prevent having your legs scratched to bits?

We understand and we can help!
Stacey isn’t just a dog trainer, she’s also a dog GROOMER, and will teach you all the tips and tricks to make grooming your dog a pleasure instead of an event you dread.

You’ll learn:

  • How to choose the correct brush and comb for your dog
  • Proper brushing and combing techniques to prevent matting
  • Which coat sprays are the best

She’ll also answer your questions about your specific dog and his or her coat type.
So whether you’re a dog grooming DIYer, or you take your dog to the groomer every 6 weeks and do maintenance in between visits, this seminar will teach you critical pieces of the grooming puzzle that you need to know.

Bring all of your brushes, combs and products as well as a variety of high value treats.

*This workshop counts as a class out of your package.*
Space is limited, to register please email: ksdt.katy@gmail.com

Rally Fun Workshop

Friday November 15th 8:00 PM

Stacey will be hosting this workshop!

Come join us to learn a new way to practice the skills your dog already knows and learn new ones as well.

Rally Obedience is a fun and challenging way to practice skills/commands that your dog knows using a timed ‘course’.

We’ll set up a route of 8 – 10 signs that describe which skill to perform. Each team moves through the sequence at their own pace, and will have the opportunity to make improvements (and challenges!) as they go.

For more information check out the American Kennel Club website: https://www.akc.org/sports/rally/

DOG SENSE PODCAST

In this episode, Kathy and Sarah discuss the whys, the woes, and how to finally ditch the earplugs.

Student Question:

How do I keep my dog from destroying our seasonal holiday decorations? We decorate our family room extensively, and every year he always chews something up, even when we’re home!

Kathy's Answer:

The holidays can bring extra challenges to all relationships, not the least of which involve canine members of the family. The big question is why he would  choose the holidays as his time to explore his inner decorator.

The answer to this problem, I think, is tied directly to how your life changes during this time of year. Maybe your dog doesn’t get the amount of attention and exercise he’s used to, so his boredom drives him to find another outlet. Dogs can’t watch Netflix to entertain themselves, but they derive great pleasure in eating the TV remote! The decorations that he only sees on holidays makes a particularly enticing target (hence his penchant for them vs. the furniture that he sees year-round.

And let’s not forget the extra family or social commitments that cause you – and your family! – to be abnormally excited and stressed out. Dogs are accurate barometers of our emotions; they feel (and become confused by) the stress and chaos that ensues. Although you can take a hot bath or go to the gym to decompress, your dog’s options are usually of the oral variety, so be sure to offer him plenty of suitable outlets for his chewing in the form of new (durable!) toys. In addition, remember to monitor him closely whenever he’s near the decorations. As dog owner’s, it’s our responsibility to provide our dogs with the opportunity to engage in activities that serve their minds as well as their bodies. And when the basics are being met  – a healthy diet, proper training, affection, exercise, and toys that are appropriate for your dog -then everyone will have a happier holiday season.

Kathy Santo's Pet-A-Groom

Did You Know: We have our own FULL-SERVICE grooming shop located at 25 N Spruce Street.

The trainers at the dog school regularly accompany our student’s dogs to the shop to help them relax during their grooming experience.

We also take our FastTrack dogs there when requested, and do training sessions to teach them how to calmly stand on the table, have their nails done, and allow their body to be handled, even when there’s lots of sounds going on from the clippers and dryers! We like to say that our student’s dogs learn to be the best grooming clients!
