UPCOMING EVENTS

Canine Body Language Workshop

Thursday February 13th at 8:00 PM.

This FREE workshop is for humans only–bring the whole family!

For humans to effectively communicate, we’ve devised an immense vocabulary, but dogs are limited to ‘words’ formed by their body parts. Because of this, the dog must re use “words” and depend on context and combination to form his “sentence”. Understanding what your dog is saying is extremely important to prevent bites, fights, and miscommunications between dogs and humans, and dogs and dogs.

PlayCare Events

Puppy Bowl PlayCare Event:
When: Monday, February 3rd, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM

It’s game day…for the DOGS!  🏈

What better way to spend the day after Super Bowl Sunday than to host our very own Puppy Bowl 2020! 🏟

We’d love to see your puppy or dog wearing a jersey, bandana, leash, or collar with ‘their’ favorite team logo or colors!

We’ll have dog-approved football toys 🏈 on the PlayCare floor as well as crunchy, cheesy, bacon-ey snacks ready for halftime. 🧀

We’re also highlighting one of our monthly ‘Special Flavors’: Super Bowl Cheesy Kong.

It’s made with the same ingredients as the snacks, but we freeze it, so it becomes a food puzzle. That way, the dogs have to work a little harder with their jaws *and* their brains to get the prize. The result is a happy, content, and brain/body tired dog at the end of their day with us!

Reserve your dog’s spot in our PlayCare program for Monday Feb 3rd. by texting us “PLAYCARE” to 201-512-8316 and filling out the form sent back to you.

Grooming Workshop

Friday November 15th 6:00 PM

  • Do you have a poodle, or doodle, or long-coated dog that needs to be brushed?
  • Did you think you knew how to brush a dog… until the last time he was at the groomers and they had to “shave him down” because he was so matted?
  • Are your dog’s nails so long that you wore jeans all summer to prevent having your legs scratched to bits?

We understand and we can help!
Stacey isn’t just a dog trainer, she’s also a dog GROOMER, and will teach you all the tips and tricks to make grooming your dog a pleasure instead of an event you dread.

You’ll learn:

  • How to choose the correct brush and comb for your dog
  • Proper brushing and combing techniques to prevent matting
  • Which coat sprays are the best

She’ll also answer your questions about your specific dog and his or her coat type.
So whether you’re a dog grooming DIYer, or you take your dog to the groomer every 6 weeks and do maintenance in between visits, this seminar will teach you critical pieces of the grooming puzzle that you need to know.

Bring all of your brushes, combs and products as well as a variety of high value treats.

*This workshop counts as a class out of your package.*
Space is limited, to register please email: events@kathysanto.com

Parenting Kids And Dogs: A Dog Bite Prevention Seminar

Thursday February 27th 8:00 PM

77% of all dog bites are from family or friend’s dogs, and they rarely happen out of the blue.  Learn how to keep your kids SAFE and your dog HAPPY!

Every day we tell our students:

“Supervise your dogs and kids while they’re together, no matter how friendly your dog is!”

And it’s not just us that say it.  Breeders, trainers, and veterinarians everywhere say the same thing! Everyone knows the drill.  So why doesn’t it work? Why are there an estimated 800,000 Americans seeking medical attention for dog bites each year, with over half of these injuries to children ages 5-9?

It may surprise you to know that the bites are not a result of negligent parents leaving their dog and child alone in a room together. We’ve consulted on hundreds of dog bite cases, and 95% of the time, the parent was standing within 3 feet of the child, actively watching both child and dog when the bite happened! Parents are supervising, which means the problem is not a lack of supervision. The problem is no one has taught parents (or children!) to correctly interpret what they’re looking at!

Join us for a workshop to learn the good, the bad, and the ‘about to go horribly wrong’ body language of a dog.  By the end of the night, you’ll have a better understanding of the predictable series of canine body cues that indicate a dog is thinking about biting.  We’ll also teach you why dogs don’t understand intent, and why human gestures of love are almost never received that way by canines.

*This seminar is for humans only and counts as a class out of your class package*

Dog Park Class

The perfect combination of training and play time!

Friday February 21st 6:00 – 9:00pm

Registration is required, and groups will be formed based on dog’s size and play style to ensure the best social climate for the dogs.

You’ll be emailed your start time when you sign up. Each class will be one hour between 6-9 PM, and count as a class out of your package.

Please put ADULT DOG PLAYGROUPS in the subject line.

Prerequisites: Social dogs, who have trained a basic “here” and “place” command (can be beginner level).

Curriculum: WARM UP (aka ‘Cocktail Hour’): The beginning of class will be a review of “Place” and “Here” commands – two vitally important skills for a fun and successful playgroup.

The ability to call your dog away from play as well as have him calmly watch without participating (and barking, lunging, and breaking a command) is not only a measurement of his abilities, helps control the ‘vibe’, creating a safe and conflict-free play session.

PLAY TIME: This is where the party gets started!

The goal is to have multiple play sessions for each dog, with different combinations of playmates (always size-appropriate!) in order to help increase their social skills.

In addition, we’ll teach YOU the signals of ‘good play’, ‘not-so-good play’, and how to interpret dog body language so you know what’s about to happen, and answer all your questions.

COOL DOWN: The last few minutes of class will be spent doing some basic, on-leash sequences of commands. This helps you and your dog reconnect, and ends the session with you both working as a team.

*This workshop counts as a class out of your package.*
Space is limited, to register please email: events@kathysanto.com

DOG SENSE PODCAST

In this episode, Kathy and Sarah will be talking about if you were to go on a long road trip with your dog.

In this episode, Kathy and Sarah discuss one of their favorite training exercises ever, called the emergency recall game.

This Month's most popular blogs

“Why do I have to use food to train my dog?”

“I own a lot of antiques and good upholstered furniture. What breeds are least destructive? Which ones don’t shed?”

Ever since I was exposed to Valentine’s Day, I had a sense that it was a “fake” holiday, with unrealistically high expectations. Experiences like hoping my 4th grade crush would drop a few extra Snoopy cards in my desk mailbox (he didn’t), to watching the captain of our high school football team bring an armful of carnations into the lunch room to present to his girlfriend, who ran off crying because she wanted roses, confirmed my suspicions. However, I also learned that celebrating the big day with my DOG virtually guaranteed that whatever I did in the way of a surprise, was ALWAYS a home run! Whether it was me dripping red dye on a Milk Bone (and everywhere else, my Mom says) when I was in kindergarten, or buying  her the biggest heart-shaped dog to I could find , “Teddi” loved it all.

So read on for some fun and thoughtful ways to celebrate your love for your canine companion this Valentine’s Day!
